Cindy Stelmackowich pursued academic subjects in the sciences, humanities and fine arts at undergraduate and graduate levels. She received a combined BA (Honours) and Studio Arts Certificate from the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, and a MA from Carleton University in Ottawa. After living and working in New York City following her Master’s degree, she studied with leading authorities within the history and theory of art and gender studies at Binghamton University, New York. Her funded PhD dissertation research was conducted in medical, scientific and historical art libraries around North America and Europe, and focused on the visual cultures of medical science. She was awarded post-doctoral fellowships with the New York Academy of Medicine, the SSHRC Strategic Knowledge Cluster “Situating Science”, and the Lichtenberg-Kolleg Institute.

More about me…

My art practice has centered on long-standing interests related to the human body as a site of fragility, mortality, beauty and memory. Of specific interest to me is how our bodies have, and continue to be, subjected to the regimes of medical practice, knowledge and preservation.
