Faith Fyles: In Full Bloom at the Ottawa Art Gallery

Posted on

This exhibition is a unique collaboration between the Ottawa Art Gallery and Ingenium – Canada’s Museums of Science and Innovation. Drawing on Ingenium’s large horticultural art and artefacts collection, as well as from the collections of Canadian Museum of Nature, Library and Archives Canada, Royal Botanical Gardens (Canada), and the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, the exhibition team launched a research project that has shed new light on Faith Fyles’s life and career—and uncovered previously undocumented works. Faith Fyles (1875-1961) worked as a scientist and artist while being the first woman to be appointed as a botanist with the Canadian Dept of Agriculture. This feminist revisionist exhibition also includes contemporary artwork by 5 women artists working with themes related to plant life, gender, agriculture and the natural world.
